The United Kingdom will help Ukraine create its own analogue of Storm Shadow
The UK plans to help Ukraine develop its own production of long-range missiles based on Storm Shadow/SCALP technology, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to announce during a visit to Kyiv on August 24.
This is reported by The Guardian.
The British government plans to allow European defense company MBDA to declassify information about British-made components used in the Franco-British Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missile. The data is expected to help Ukraine in the future create its own analogue of the long-range missile.
The implementation of such a project could take several years. At the same time, it should become part of a broader program to develop Ukrainian long-range weapons production.
In addition, Burnham is to announce assistance from Great Britain and France in establishing production lines for assembling long-range missiles directly in Ukraine.
Burnham’s visit to Kyiv will be his first overseas trip since taking office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The trip is timed to coincide with the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.
The British Prime Minister stated that London’s support for Ukraine will not weaken.
“I am proud of our country’s contribution to Ukraine’s development and want the Ukrainian people to hear directly from me that our support will not waver. Ultimately, Ukraine’s security is our security,” Burnham said.
While in Kyiv, the British Prime Minister also plans to participate in a meeting of the “coalition of the willing” , which includes 34 countries. One of the key topics of the meeting will be strengthening Ukraine’s capabilities to counter Russian strikes at long distances.
It has previously been reported that the UK is developing new long-range missiles for Ukraine that will not contain American components and could enter service within a year. According to sources, the new systems will be cheaper than the Storm Shadow missiles and will have a range of over 500 kilometers.
