The US and Iran may soon agree on a basic agreement that should stop tensions in the region and open the way to full-fledged negotiations on the nuclear program.
This is reported by Axios, citing sources in the American administration.
According to the publication, the parties are already discussing a draft memorandum of understanding and are expecting Tehran’s answers to key questions within the next two days.
The document, which currently consists of about 14 points, envisages an end to the confrontation and the launch of a new round of negotiations. In particular, it deals with restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program, easing US sanctions, and restoring free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
“We expect Iran to respond on key issues within the next 48 hours,” the publication quotes one of the American officials as saying.
A moratorium on uranium enrichment is being discussed separately. According to sources, the US is insisting on a long restriction of up to 20 years, while Iran has previously proposed a much shorter period. Currently, the compromise may be about 12-15 years.
The document may also include Iran’s commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and to allow strict international inspections, including unscheduled checks.
In response, Washington is ready to gradually lift sanctions and unfreeze some of Iran’s assets.
According to sources, the next talks could take place in Islamabad or Geneva. At the same time, if the agreements fail, the US does not rule out a return to tougher measures, including a naval blockade or even the resumption of hostilities.
Recall, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the completion of the military operation against Iran called Epic Fury, which had been ongoing since February.
