The US and Ukraine are modernizing missiles for the S-300: when to expect the result

This was announced in an interview with PBS NewsHour by retired US Army Colonel and President of the Delphi Global Research Center Robert Hamilton.

According to him, the parties are working on upgrading the existing S-300 missiles or developing a more modern analogue that will have better combat capabilities. It is expected that the results of this work may appear closer to the end of 2026.

Hamilton also noted that the potential production capacity would allow for the production of about 100–200 anti-aircraft missiles each year.

The idea of creating a replacement for Soviet air defense systems is not new. Back in September 2024, then-US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reported that Washington, together with Ukraine and with the support of European companies, was working on developing an alternative to the S-300 anti-aircraft system, as well as the R-27 aircraft missiles.

In particular, at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Ukraine had about 25–30 divisions of S-300 of various modifications. However, during the war, the stock of missiles for these complexes was significantly reduced, so the Ukrainian air defense system increasingly relies on Western complexes and ammunition for them.

It was previously reported that Ukraine has yet to receive a license to produce interceptor missiles for Patriot systems. The US has stated that negotiations on this are ongoing, but they will not be completed before the beginning of winter.

Poland also proposed to the United States and Ukraine to establish joint production of missiles for Patriot air defense systems on its territory.
