The US called on Ukraine not to attack non-Russian ships in the Black Sea: the reason

The administration of US President Donald Trump has warned Ukraine against attacking non-Russian vessels in the Black Sea after a request from the American company Chevron. The reason was the attacks by Ukrainian drones in the Novorossiysk area, during which tankers were damaged, including a vessel chartered by Chevron.

The impetus for the appeal was a conversation between Chevron CEO Mike Wirth and White House representatives regarding protecting the company’s business in Kazakhstan from the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

According to the publication, during the attack by Ukrainian drones in the Novorossiysk area, four tankers were damaged, including a vessel chartered by Chevron.

Novorossiysk is the terminus of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which is 15% owned by Chevron and supplies about 2% of global oil supplies. Kazakhstan is already being forced to cut production due to shipment restrictions.

“The administration views the CPC as a vital energy supply channel from Kazakhstan to European markets, serving as an alternative to Russian resources,” the US official said.

The publication notes that Chevron owns 50% of the Tengiz field, which provides about 12% of the company’s global production – up to 1 million barrels of oil per day. The project is expected to generate about $6 billion in free cash flow this year, and the company previously invested about $48 billion in its expansion.

Analysts estimate that if attacks on exports through Novorossiysk continue, Chevron may be forced to reduce production at the Tengiz field due to the port’s limited oil storage capabilities.

At the same time, analyst Paul Cheng suggested that due to the US position, Ukraine may focus its attacks on other, less politically sensitive targets.

By the way, the Security Service of Ukraine reported a series of strikes on Russian military facilities in Rostov-on-Don and in the Caspian Sea . According to the special service, air defense systems, a missile boat, cargo ships, warehouses with FPV drones, and an oil platform were hit.
