Scheduled talks between the United States and Iran to end the conflict in the Middle East will not take place. The cancellation of the meeting has increased doubts about the possibility of achieving a lasting truce.
This was reported by Reuters.
Swiss Foreign Ministry. The meeting was supposed to take place in the resort town of Bürgenstock, but the department confirmed that the talks were canceled without specifying the reasons.
Meanwhile, US Vice President J.D. Vance canceled his trip to Switzerland. Earlier, American representatives said that they planned to hold an official signing ceremony during the meeting.
The Iranian side has not yet made an official statement about the cancellation of the talks. According to the Iranian Tasnim news agency, Tehran wanted to receive confirmation of the US’s fulfillment of the terms of the previous agreements before sending a delegation.
Some controversy also arose over the content of a possible agreement. Washington stated that the document should provide not only for a cessation of hostilities, but also for restrictions on Iran’s missile program.
“If the American side makes excessive demands, we will not accept them,” said Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
The situation is complicated by the position of Israel, which was not a party to the US-Iran talks and continues its military operation against the Hezbollah group in Lebanon. New Israeli strikes have killed at least 15 people, Lebanese state media reported.
Against this backdrop, questions remain about whether a possible ceasefire can be maintained. Israel says it has no plans to completely withdraw troops from Lebanon and continues to expand its zone of control.
In the US, some of President Donald Trump’s allies in Congress also express concerns that during the negotiations, Washington may have made too many concessions in order to end the conflict.
The United States and Iran have previously signed a memorandum of understanding that is intended to serve as the basis for further negotiations between the countries. The document outlines key principles for cooperation, including on issues such as the nuclear program, sanctions, and regional security.
The United States has officially ended its naval blockade of Iran’s ports and coastal areas, according to a statement issued by US President Donald Trump.
Recall that the agreement that the US and Iran must agree on after signing the memorandum of understanding provides for the creation of a $300 billion investment fund in the Iranian economy.
By the way, during the eight-week truce, Iran restored a significant part of its missile arsenal and probably received new Russian-made weapons . According to Western intelligence estimates, Tehran currently has about 75% of its pre-war ammunition and is capable of further increasing its stockpile.
