Brian Mast, the chairman of the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, said that Congress is unlikely to approve a new package of financial aid to Ukraine. At the same time, the US supports continued sanctions pressure on Russia and the transfer of weapons to Ukraine.

This is reported by Radio Liberty .

According to Brian Mast, European states should take greater responsibility for supporting Ukraine, since the war is taking place on European territory.

“I don’t believe you’ll see a new American security assistance package for Ukraine – $6 billion, $60 billion, or any other amount,” said Brian Mast.

The congressman noted that Washington will continue to provide intelligence support to Ukraine and will allow the sale and transfer of weapons even without the adoption of a new large-scale funding package.

“We are ready to be peace brokers. Europe must protect its own backyard,” said Brian Mast.

He also accused some European governments of long-standing dependence on Russian energy and the use of US security guarantees. Separately, Mast supported strengthening sanctions against Russia, but stressed that the restrictions should not harm US allies more than Russia itself.

“Sanctions should do more harm to our enemies and more good to us and our allies,” the congressman said.

The material also notes that the administration of President Donald Trump did not include funding for military assistance to Ukraine under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative in the draft US defense budget for fiscal year 2027.

Acting Chief Financial Officer of the US Department of War, Jules Hurst, confirmed this during a hearing before the US Senate Armed Services Committee.

“Yes, that’s right. There is no funding for USAI in this budget,” said Jules Gerst.

According to journalists, total US defense spending for 2027 could be about $1.5 trillion.

By the way, the petition of the US House of Representatives to provide security assistance to Ukraine and impose new sanctions against Russia reached the threshold of 218 votes.

It was previously reported that the US Congress called on President Trump to hold an urgent briefing for congressmen on the situation with the supply of aid to Ukraine.

The day before, it became known that Ukraine and the United States are preparing a new defense agreement in the field of drones, which could become one of the key areas of cooperation between the countries.
