US peace negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner demanded that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agree to the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas, as Russia insists.
Axios reports this, citing its own sources.
According to the publication, after Witkoff and Kushner’s meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, they attempted to obtain confirmation of Zelensky’s consent during a telephone conversation.
Axios also notes that after their visit to Moscow, the American peace proposal for Ukraine became less favorable.
During a phone call with Vitkoff and Kushner, Zelenskyy claimed he hadn’t had time to review the updated version of the US peace plan, having received the document only an hour before the call. Meanwhile, US officials claim they had handed over the plan the day before. Other Axios sources confirm that certain points were indeed made available shortly before the call.
It was previously reported that the American team is using pressure to persuade the Ukrainian side to accept a peace agreement that would supposedly end the war.
As a reminder, a meeting between European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took place in London.
