American officials believe it is unlikely that China will invade Taiwan in 2027, despite Xi Jinping’s demand to prepare the military for a possible forceful takeover of the island by that date.
Reuters reports this, citing American officials.
According to their estimates, one of the reasons is delays in China’s military training, which have been exacerbated by a large-scale anti-corruption campaign in the People’s Liberation Army.
Another factor in Washington is considered to be the presidential elections in Taiwan in 2028.
According to the agency’s interlocutors, some Chinese officials expect that after the elections, a government more inclined to rapprochement with Beijing may be formed on the island.
If the Democratic Progressive Party, led by incumbent President Lai Chin Teh, retains power, the risks of a forceful scenario after 2028, according to American officials, may increase.
At the same time, Xi Jinping demanded that the Chinese armed forces be capable of carrying out an operation to seize Taiwan by 2027, if such a decision is made. However, the Chinese leader has not publicly announced 2027 as the date for the invasion.
Beijing considers Taiwan part of China’s territory and does not rule out the possibility of using force. Taipei rejects China’s claims and insists that the island’s future can only be determined by its people.
Recall that earlier the US temporarily blocked military aid to Taiwan worth more than $400 million . The package was supposed to include ammunition and autonomous drones.
In addition, China imposed sanctions on American defense companies after selling $11.1 billion in arms to Taiwan.
