The United States has concluded Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and withdrawn its military contingent. After that, responsibility for countering ISIS remnants passes directly to Iraqi security forces.

This was reported by the US Department of Defense.

The Pentagon explained that the completion of the operation marks a transition from a coalition military mission to a model in which Iraq itself will play a key role in ensuring security.

The American side expects that Iraqi security forces, in particular the Peshmerga and other units of Iraqi Kurdistan, will continue to independently counter the remnants of ISIS.

At the same time, Washington is not stopping cooperation with Baghdad. The United States will continue to provide targeted training and intelligence support to its Iraqi partners.

“The United States remains committed to the fight against terrorism and will continue to work with Iraq and our partners to ensure that ISIS can never reemerge from Iraqi soil,” the statement said.

The Pentagon also emphasized that it is now up to the Iraqi government to respond to threats posed by both ISIS remnants and groups affiliated with Iran.

Operation Inherent Resolve was launched in 2014 after a major ISIS offensive in Syria and Iraq. The group’s territorial “caliphate” in Iraq was eliminated in 2017 and in Syria in 2019.

After that, the role of the American military gradually changed – from direct combat operations to training, advising, and supporting local forces.
