US President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order aimed at protecting the American energy grid from potential interference by foreign countries.
This is stated in a statement from the White House.
The document provides for a general ban on the acquisition and installation of certain foreign-made electrical equipment for wholesale power systems in the United States. The restrictions also apply to critical software and digital capabilities associated with such equipment.
At the same time, exceptions may be provided for in certain cases if the purchase or installation of equipment is accompanied by measures that eliminate potential risks to cybersecurity and the stability of the energy system.
The Trump administration notes that the rapid development of advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and the defense industry is increasing the United States’ need for a reliable electricity supply.
At the same time, reliance on foreign suppliers of electrical equipment creates additional risks for American supply chains.
The White House also stated that individual foreign actors are increasingly trying to create or exploit vulnerabilities in the American energy system.
We are talking about the infrastructure on which the US national defense, emergency services, critical infrastructure, and the country’s economy depend.
In effect, Washington is seeking to reduce the potential dependence of the American energy grid on foreign technology and equipment that could be used for cyberattacks, sabotage, or other interference.
