The United States has imposed new import tariffs on 60 countries, citing their failure to combat forced labor. The new trade restrictions include China, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and India.

This is reported by the BBC.

The new tariffs range from 10% to 12.5%. They came into effect after the expiration of a temporary 10% tariff on foreign goods that the United States had imposed earlier this year.

Washington explains that the decision should encourage trading partners to more actively combat forced labor and eliminate unfair competitive advantages in global markets.

“These actions will begin to correct what is both a human rights violation and a trade practice that distorts competition to improve the well-being of workers around the world,” said US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

The White House introduced the initiative to introduce new tariffs last month. After completing the necessary procedures, the restrictions officially came into effect on July 24.

By the way, US President Donald Trump has warned that he may impose a 100% tariff on French wines if France does not repeal its digital tax on American technology companies.
