The US military has intercepted at least three Iranian-flagged tankers in Asian waters and is redirecting them away from areas near India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
Reuters reports this, citing sources in the transport and security sectors.
Among the intercepted vessels were the supertanker Deep Sea, partially loaded with crude oil and previously spotted off the coast of Malaysia. Other vessels involved were the tanker Sevin, approximately 65% full (up to 1 million barrels), and the supertanker Dorena, which was carrying approximately 2 million barrels of oil.
US Central Command said the Dorena was being escorted by a US Navy destroyer in the Indian Ocean after attempting to breach the blockade.
In addition, according to sources, US forces may have intercepted another tanker, the Derya, which was unable to unload oil in India after the US permit for its import expired.
In total, according to military information, since the beginning of the blockade, 29 ships have already been forced to change course or return to ports.
It was previously reported that Iran opened the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial shipping during the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. This decision was part of the ceasefire agreement and impacted shipping safety in the region.
