The US is demanding that Moscow pay $225 billion for the debts of the Russian Empire
The American investment fund Noble Capital RSD has filed a lawsuit in the US federal court in the District of Columbia, demanding that Moscow pay billions of dollars for the debt obligations of the Russian Empire.
This was reported by The Moscow Times.
“The Russian Federation, in violation of the doctrine of succession of power, has refused and continues to refuse to fulfill certain obligations regarding state debts incurred by its predecessor, the Russian Empire,” the lawsuit states.
As noted, Nord Capital RSD considers itself the legal owner of $25 million in Russian Empire bonds with an interest rate of 5.5%, which were issued in 1916. Currently, the debts, including interest, are estimated at no less than $225.8 billion — almost half, 43%, of the annual budget of the Russian Federation.
The State Duma stated that debts should not be recognized due to statute of limitations, and also because “Russia is not the legal successor of the Russian Empire.”
“The lawyers interviewed by RBC note that previously even acknowledging the debt would not have allowed the court to enforce the decision, but the sanctions policy has created the possibility of applying security measures and asset management. At the same time, the plaintiff notes in his statement that this is not about confiscation, but about offsetting the debt as a form of fulfilling the obligation,” the material notes.
