US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the talks between special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Kyiv and Moscow were meaningful. According to him, during the meetings the parties discussed new ideas that could help return to the negotiation process to end the war.
Rubio said this while talking to reporters.
He emphasized that he does not want to call these negotiations successful or unsuccessful yet, but considers the very fact of substantive discussion of new approaches important.
“In my opinion, these were meaningful negotiations. I don’t want to evaluate them as good or bad, productive or unproductive, but just to note that they were meaningful. New ideas were discussed,” the US Secretary of State said.
Rubio acknowledged that the war is far from over. He called the Russian-Ukrainian conflict very complex and noted that for a long time the parties have not shown much willingness to make concessions.
At the same time, according to him, both Ukraine and Russia continue to adhere to their clear “red lines.” This, according to Rubio, remains one of the main obstacles to the resumption of full-fledged negotiations.
Despite this, the US Secretary of State sees an opportunity for further diplomatic movement. He hopes that the contacts between Witkoff and Kushner in Kyiv and Moscow will help prepare the ground for a new round of negotiations.
“I don’t want to be too optimistic, but I’m not a pessimist,” Rubio said.
He added that in the coming weeks there may be an opportunity to develop a roadmap for further steps.
“It’s possible to come to a conclusion that is acceptable to both sides, because that’s what’s needed to get this over with. Both sides will have to agree to it,” Rubio stressed.
According to him, the United States remains ready to act as a mediator if Kyiv and Moscow demonstrate a willingness to return to the negotiating table.
Recall that US President Donald Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner presented updated peace proposals during a visit to Kyiv . However, several hours of talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not bring a breakthrough.
As reported, US President’s special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner made their first statements in Kyiv after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. They emphasized the need not only to end the war, but also to create conditions for lasting peace and the restoration of Ukraine.
