The administration of US President Donald Trump has begun preparations for possible peace talks with Iran after three weeks of war. Washington is already defining key demands for Tehran that could form the basis of a future agreement.

This is reported by Axios .

Initial discussions are underway at the White House about the next phase of the war and a potential diplomatic settlement, according to sources. At the same time, American officials expect that hostilities could last another 2-3 weeks.

US President Donald Trump has said that he is considering the possibility of “winding down” the war, but in parallel his advisers are already working on preparing the negotiation process.

Trump’s special representatives Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are involved in discussing possible terms. According to sources, their proposals are based on previous developments that were discussed in Geneva 2 days before the war began.

The US has formulated a list of key demands on Iran :

  • abandonment of the missile program for 5 years;
  • complete cessation of uranium enrichment;
  • decommissioning of reactors in Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow;
  • introduction of strict international control over the nuclear program;
  • concluding arms control agreements with countries in the region limiting missiles to 1,000 km;
  • stopping funding for proxy groups, including Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Hamas.

At the same time, Iran is putting forward its own conditions for starting negotiations. These include a ceasefire, guarantees of non-resumption of war, and payment of compensation.

“We believe we have succeeded in containing Iran’s development,” said one American official.

According to another official, the issue of compensation may become the subject of a compromise.

“They call it reparations. Maybe we’ll call it the return of frozen funds,” he said.

There has been no direct contact between the US and Iran in recent days. Messages are being passed through intermediaries, including Egypt, Qatar, and the UK.

According to sources, Washington is also trying to determine who exactly in Iran makes decisions and can be the key negotiator, as well as to choose an effective mediator for dialogue.

Trump’s advisers are trying to be prepared for the possible start of negotiations with Iran in the near future.

Recall that the administration of US President Donald Trump has decided to accelerate the sale of billions of dollars in weapons to Middle Eastern countries , using an emergency decision mechanism to bypass Congress.

The day before, Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei rejected proposals for a ceasefire and reducing tensions with the United States. By the way, in his first statement, the new Iranian leader emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed . According to him, this is pressure on Israel and the United States.

Earlier it was reported that, against the backdrop of the third week of the US military operation against Iran, allies are pressuring United States President Donald Trump to explain the goals and timing of the end of the conflict . At the same time, the White House, according to sources, is not providing the allies with detailed information about further plans for the war.
