Next Round of US Sanctions Looms Over Russia

The United States is set to impose a new wave of sanctions on Russia, with measures potentially taking effect as early as next week.

Interfax-Ukraine reported this, citing Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna.

According to her, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant stated during a meeting with European ambassadors that his department is ready to intensify sanctions targeting Russia.

“The US Treasury Secretary held a meeting with European ambassadors, during which he stated that additional sanctions against Russia could be introduced as early as next week,” Stefanishyna noted.

She added that Washington’s willingness to tighten sanctions due to Russia’s war against Ukraine is regularly confirmed during contacts with representatives of the US Treasury Department.

As previously reported, on December 18, the British government announced a new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, targeting the energy sector.

As a reminder, on December 18, the European Union decided to impose new restrictive measures on Russia’s ‘shadow fleet,’ adding 41 additional oil tankers to the sanctions list.”
