US President Donald Trump has approved the execution of former US Army Major Nidal Hasan, who carried out a shooting at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009 that killed 13 service members.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell reported this on the X social network, Reuters writes.

According to Parnell, Trump made the decision on the recommendation of US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. The Pentagon chief will determine the time and place of the execution.

“Hassan’s day of reckoning has finally arrived,” Parnell said.

If carried out, it would be the first execution of an American service member since 1961, when the death sentence was hanged. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, the last known execution by firing squad in the United States occurred in November 1945.

Firing squad is one of several execution methods recently added by the Trump administration to the list of permissible methods for the most serious federal crimes. Others include the electric chair and gas.

What is known about Nidal Hasan?

On November 5, 2009, Hasan opened fire at a medical facility on the Fort Hood military base where soldiers were undergoing medical checkups before deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. He killed 13 people and wounded 32 more.

At the time, Hasan was about 39 years old. A few weeks after the shooting, he was scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan.

During the arrest, a police officer injured Hasan, leaving him partially paralyzed and using a wheelchair.

After the crime, he claimed that he had acted in defense of Islamic militants outside the borders of American aggression.

In August 2013, a military court found Hasan guilty of 45 counts of premeditated murder and sentenced him to death.
