Concerns are growing in the United States over a shortage of military resources amid the escalating conflict with Iran. According to sources, the Pentagon is preparing for a possible expansion of the military operation, but its capabilities are limited.
This is reported by The Washington Post .
According to the publication, the US and Iran are close to a full-scale military conflict after another escalation of hostilities in the region. The exchange of blows has been going on for the eighth day after the breakdown of the ceasefire.
The Pentagon is sending additional aircraft to the Middle East and preparing for a possible expansion of the military operation. At the same time, the journalists’ interlocutors note that the American military is increasingly acutely experiencing a shortage of air defense, long-range ammunition and other critical resources. There are also difficulties in quickly transferring additional forces and equipment to the region, and some aircraft have already suffered combat damage.
“We don’t have enough resources to safely continue operations, and I don’t think the White House realizes that,” the official said.
Military analysts interviewed by journalists believe that the greatest risks would arise if the conflict transitioned to a large-scale land phase. Seth Jones, head of the defense and security program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, noted that deploying American troops directly on Iranian territory or near the Strait of Hormuz would be extremely dangerous.
According to the US Central Command, the US military continues to strike the military infrastructure of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. It is reported that coastal surveillance facilities, air defense systems, naval forces, as well as missile and drone depots have been damaged.
At the same time, Iran announced US strikes on a nuclear power facility under construction in the southwest of the country. Tehran also reported attacks on US military facilities in Kuwait, commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz area, and announced its intention to prevent the use of certain sea routes protected by the US.
The day before, the US Central Command reported new losses among American service members. After Iran’s strike on a military base in Jordan, another group of unidentified remains was discovered, and in Iraq, an American serviceman died during the controlled destruction of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone.
US President Donald Trump called the deaths of the soldiers “a very sad event.” According to The Washington Post , at least 17, and possibly 18, American service members have been killed since the start of hostilities against Iran, and more than 430 have been injured.
The publication also notes that the Pentagon has not held open briefings on the military campaign against Iran for over 2 months, which, according to journalists, indicates the high sensitivity of the situation and the administration’s reluctance to publicly disclose the scale of the problems associated with further hostilities.
By the way, Iran has asked the Yemeni Houthi movement to be ready to block shipping through the Red Sea if the United States strikes Iranian energy infrastructure.
It was previously reported that on the night of July 15, the United States launched a new series of strikes on Iranian military facilities and announced the resumption of a naval blockade of ships heading to or leaving Iranian ports .
The day before, Iranian cruise missiles hit two tankers flying the flag of the United Arab Emirates in the Strait of Hormuz . The attack killed one crew member and injured eight others, including two Ukrainian citizens.
