The US is promoting the “Anchorage formula” in negotiations and offering guarantees in exchange for withdrawal from Donbas – media
During negotiations, the American side regularly returns to the so-called Anchorage Agreement—the results of the meeting between US and Russian leaders in Alaska—and offers Ukraine security guarantees in exchange for its withdrawal from Donbas.
This was reported by Ukrainska Pravda, citing a member of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s team, who was familiar with the details of the March 21-22 negotiations.
According to the source, the Russian side constantly invokes the “Anchorage formula,” effectively blocking the development of a full-fledged negotiation process. Meanwhile, US representatives are also returning to this topic.
“At meetings, there are three parties, but Ukraine is constantly debating this Anchorage thing. So, no matter what they discuss, it always comes down to the Americans saying, ‘Get out of Donbas, and we’ll build you paradise, just like we agreed on in Alaska,’” the source noted.
According to him, the Ukrainian side is trying to divert the discussion from the idea of troop withdrawal by proposing alternatives, including economic formats or special zones. However, the source claims, the conversation is once again returning to the demand for withdrawal from Donbas.
It is also noted that the United States does not yet see the possibility of reaching an agreement between Ukraine and Russia on the territorial issue and may withdraw from the negotiation process, focusing on other priorities, including Iran or domestic political issues.
At the same time, according to the source, in the event of the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas, the American side is ready to provide “real security guarantees” for Ukraine.
As a reminder, on March 21-22, meetings between Ukrainian and US representatives were held in the United States to explore ways to end the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine.
As a reminder, the peace process to end the war between Ukraine and Russia is in jeopardy . According to diplomats, this is due to US President Donald Trump’s diminished interest in the negotiations and the escalating situation in the Middle East, which is distracting Washington.
As previously reported, US Special Representative Steve Witkoff stated that new progress could be seen in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in the near future.
