The United States is initiating a timetable for negotiations that aims to end the war between Russia and Ukraine by June.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this during a conversation with journalists.
According to him, the American side is committed to doing everything possible to achieve peace within this timeframe and is striving to agree on a clear schedule of further steps. The US has also proposed a new initiative for an energy ceasefire. Ukraine has already expressed its willingness to support it, while the Russian delegation promised to respond later.
Zelenskyy emphasized that during the negotiations, Kyiv reaffirmed its position: Ukraine will not agree to withdraw from Donbas for the sake of a peace agreement. The fundamental principle of a possible ceasefire remains the formula “we stand where we stand.”
The President added that the United States is ready to join in monitoring the ceasefire. At the same time, despite Russia’s shift in rhetoric during the negotiations, Ukraine lacks confidence in its representatives. Reuters previously reported, citing sources, that Ukraine, the United States, and Russia still have not reached agreement on key issues, specifically territorial settlement and control over the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
As a reminder, Ukraine, the United States, and Russia held another round of talks on resolving the war in Abu Dhabi. The parties made some progress on procedural issues, but key disagreements remain. The most contentious issue in the negotiations remains control over the entire Donetsk region, on which the parties have not yet reached an agreed-upon resolution.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated the Kremlin’s demands on Ukraine as a condition for ending the war. Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War stated that these messages indicate Moscow’s desire to politically subjugate Ukraine . The Kremlin can achieve this without full military control over Ukrainian territory, using political influence and the formation of a loyal government.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that ending the fighting remains the top priority and expressed hope that peace can be achieved within the next year through active diplomacy and negotiations.
