The US, Ukraine, and Russia cannot advance in negotiations on a possible peace agreement because of the main issue – the future of Donbas.
Politico writes about this.
American negotiators continue to demand that Ukraine agree to give all of Donbas to Russia, while the Kremlin is trying to regain territories it never captured during the war.
A European official familiar with the negotiations told Politico that the US is looking for a way to get Ukraine to give up territory. He stressed that the US side “continues to think about how to force Ukraine to leave Donbas.”
Ukraine says it will only support a deal that freezes the front line at its current positions. Currently, about 30% of Donbas is under Ukrainian control.
The official also noted that Russia is pressuring Kyiv to give up additional territories, and the United States is pressuring Ukraine to quickly agree to a compromise. US President Donald Trump, according to sources, is expressing disappointment with Kyiv.
Ukraine is waiting to see what role Washington will take in the process: a mediator or a party that bows to Russia’s demands, and what security guarantees the US is willing to provide.
It was previously reported that the American team is using pressure to persuade the Ukrainian side to adopt a peace agreement that is supposed to end the war.
We will remind you that after negotiations between the Ukrainian and American delegations in Geneva, the US peace plan for Ukraine underwent significant changes.
