The US is talking about turning Russia into an “Eldorado”
US President Donald Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner want to turn Russia into a kind of “Eldorado” for American business. They believe that Russia’s return to the global economy could bring profits to US investors.
This is reported by The Wall Street Journal.
According to the publication, Witkoff and Kushner see Russia as a country with vast natural resources and potential business opportunities. In their opinion, economic cooperation could also reduce tensions in Russia’s relations with Ukraine and Europe.
However, most American experts and businessmen are skeptical of this idea. They emphasize that Russia’s weak economy, dictatorial regime, and lack of rule of law make any investment too risky.
Analysts say the Russian economy is comparable in size to Italy’s but has much worse growth prospects. The population is shrinking, available oil reserves are dwindling, and investors risk losing not only their money but also their freedom.
Experts also remind that even the possible end of the war will not remove Russia’s systemic hostility towards the West. Because of this, Western business in Russia will always remain under threat.
In addition, since the start of the full-scale invasion, the Kremlin has effectively seized the assets of many foreign companies, handing them over to businessmen loyal to the regime. Estimates of the amount of lost assets run into tens of billions of dollars.
Experts agree that even if sanctions are lifted, there will be no mass return of Western business to Russia. Investment in the country remains dangerous and economically dubious.
It was previously reported that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin stated that during negotiations with the United States, Russia continues to demand the complete transfer of the territory of Donbas to it, despite the fact that it does not control it militarily.
