The US is unwilling to compromise: why the negotiations in Berlin were like a “tug of war”

The administration of US President Donald Trump is increasing pressure on Ukraine during negotiations to resolve the war, seeking to conclude an agreement by the end of the year.

This is stated in the material of The Wall Street Journal.

As noted, the current negotiations resemble a tug-of-war between Ukraine and Western partners, even without Russia’s participation.

The United States is offering quick solutions, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders are convinced that the fundamental differences that still exist must be resolved.

In addition, among the key points of contention is Ukraine’s reluctance to withdraw its troops from the part of Donbas that it still controls, contrary to Washington’s call.

European and Ukrainian officials want a clear definition of what the United States will do if the Kremlin attacks again.

It is known that these issues will be discussed on December 15 during the continuation of negotiations with the American side in Berlin.

The previous round of talks ended late the night before. According to US special envoy Steve Witkoff, both teams held in-depth discussions on the peace plan and managed to make “significant progress.”

However, the publication’s interlocutor, informed about the progress of the negotiations, characterized the meeting differently. According to him, it was difficult, because the American side is unwilling to compromise.

As a reminder, the first round of negotiations between the delegations of the United States of America and Ukraine has concluded in Berlin . It lasted more than 5 hours.

By the way, European leaders have expressed concern about the US proposal to create a demilitarized zone in Donbas , fearing that the Kremlin could use it for hybrid actions. This calls into question security guarantees for Ukraine and the stability of the region.

It is worth noting thatUkraine is considering the possibility of withdrawing troops from Donbas , but only if Russia takes a similar step.

As is known, the administration of US President Donald Trump is ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees based on the principle of NATO Article 5, which will have legal force.
