The US officially reinstated the death penalty and expanded the methods of execution

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on April 24 that it would resume the federal death penalty and expand the methods of execution. The decision would allow executions to be carried out alongside other methods, paving the way for the resumption of executions after appeals are complete.

This was reported by the US Department of Justice.

The agency said it was acting in accordance with an executive order from President Donald Trump to prioritize the imposition and execution of death sentences, resuming the practice after previous restrictions.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, the Department of Justice is once again enforcing the law and supporting victims,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch.

As part of the new rulings, the Justice Department lifted the moratorium on federal executions and directed the Federal Bureau of Prisons to resume the death penalty protocol using lethal injection. The document also provides for an expansion of methods of execution.

In particular, among the activities:

  • reintroduction of the lethal injection protocol;
  • expanding the list of methods of execution, including shooting;
  • acceleration of domestic procedures in death penalty cases;
  • exploring the possibility of expanding the infrastructure for executing sentences.

The department noted that these steps are aimed at ensuring public safety and enforcing sentences for the most serious crimes.

“The Department of Justice is renewing its commitment to seeking and carrying out lawful death sentences,” the department said.

It is also reported that the death penalty has already been authorized for 44 defendants, of which 9 have already been sentenced.

Separately, the Ministry of Justice emphasized that they are planning additional changes, including reducing the time frame for considering cases and revising pardon procedures.

Thus, the United States officially returns to the active use of the death penalty at the federal level, including the possibility of using execution as one of the methods of executing sentences.
