The US plans to join security guarantees for Ukraine: what option is Washington considering?
If a peace agreement is reached between Ukraine and Russia, the United States may join in providing security guarantees, in particular, Washington is considering the option of monitoring the buffer zone.
This was reported by NBC News, citing four informed sources.
As noted, the concept of a “buffer zone” refers to a large demilitarized territory, the borders of which have not yet been determined. It will separate Ukraine and Russia.
The US will monitor the buffer zone using drones and reconnaissance equipment, coordinating with other countries that also exercise control. However, US troops will not be deployed in Ukraine.
In addition, according to sources, this territory may be guarded by the military of one or more countries that are not part of the NATO bloc, such as Saudi Arabia or Bangladesh.
Given that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin must agree to any guarantees regarding Ukraine, and the deployment of NATO troops is an unacceptable condition for him, the involvement of NATO troops will be avoided when developing security commitments.
At the same time, the publication notes that any plan is preliminary until Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Putin agree on it.
As a reminder, on Thursday, September 4, a meeting of the “coalition of the determined” began at the Elysee Palace. According to Macron, the main task of the meeting is to finalize a package of reliable security guarantees for Ukraine.
By the way, following the results of the last meeting , the “Coalition of the Willing” stated that it is ready to deploy support forces in Ukraine after the cessation of hostilities.
