The administration of US President Donald Trump reacted sharply to the proposal of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who stated that Russia could become a security guarantor for Ukraine. In Washington, this idea was openly ridiculed, emphasizing its absurdity, since Russia is the aggressor state.
This is reported by The Guardian.
According to journalists, US President Donald Trump has made it clear to his advisers in recent days that the next step to resolve the war in Ukraine should be a direct meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin. Only after that will he consider the possibility of organizing a trilateral summit. Trump explained that he wanted to “see what happens” during their dialogue, and therefore chose a wait-and-see tactic.
Despite previous promises to end the war in 24 hours, the current US president admits that the process has proven to be much more complicated. The White House has confirmed that his team is working on preparing for a potential meeting, but there are no concrete agreements or even possible locations yet.
The statements of the Russian side after the telephone conversation between Trump and Putin caused a particular resonance. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov proposed that Russia be included among the guarantors of Ukraine’s security in the future agreement. According to him, this involves the involvement of all permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Great Britain, France, China and Russia itself.
Washington, however, reacted sharply and ironically. According to a senior White House official, the idea that an aggressor state could be the guarantor of the security of the country it is fighting against was perceived as absurd by the Trump administration. One of the interlocutors bluntly stated that Lavrov’s proposal was “privately ridiculed.”
At the same time, the US is considering other options for guarantees for Ukraine. Trump’s special representative Steve Witkoff previously stated that this is a collective defense model similar to Article 5 of the NATO charter. Trump himself allows for providing Kyiv with intelligence support or air cover, but excludes sending American troops to the territory of Ukraine.
In turn, Volodymyr Zelensky, after meeting with Trump in Washington, stressed that any peace agreement must contain real and effective security guarantees so that Russia cannot launch another invasion. The Ukrainian president also announced a plan to purchase American weapons worth about $90 billion through European partners and suggested that the United States buy Ukrainian drones.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that discussing security guarantees for Ukraine without Russia is a path to nowhere . However, he allowed them to be provided by China and the United States.
As a reminder, US President DonaldTrump has admitted the possibility of providing air support to Ukraine as part of a future peace agreement with Russia . At the same time, he confirmed that American troops will not participate in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine.
As reported, France, Great Britain and a number of other European countries plan to send a limited military contingent to Ukraine. This involves the creation of a so-called “deterrence force” that will include several thousand foreign military personnel.
By the way, about 10 countries have already expressed their readiness to send their troops to Ukraine , including the United Kingdom and France. The goal is to support the process of security guarantees after the cessation of hostilities, without going to the front line.
