There are currently no prospects for a diplomatic resolution to the war in Ukraine. At the same time, the United States is prepared to continue playing a constructive role in finding a solution.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated this in an interview with the Greek publication Kathimerini .
According to him, Russia’s war against Ukraine has reached a “strategic impasse” that can only be resolved through negotiations or further escalation.
Rubio acknowledged that US diplomatic efforts are failing. He said Russia is demanding complete control over Donbas, while Ukraine considers this condition unacceptable.
“There are currently no prospects for a negotiated settlement. We are ready to play any role we can to achieve this. We have attempted this in the past, but this goal remains elusive, as the Russians are demanding full control over Donbas, which Ukraine rejects as unacceptable,” the Secretary of State noted.
At the same time, Rubio stated that the US is ready to continue diplomatic efforts. He also expressed concern about the potential for the war to escalate.
“Just yesterday, there were new attacks on vessels in the Black Sea, coordinated drone strikes. We are concerned about the possibility of a sabotage operation in a neighboring country that could spiral out of control,” Rubio said.
According to him, there are signs that Russia plans to use the approach of winter to strike the Ukrainian energy system in order to destroy the power grid and force Ukraine to capitulate.
At the same time, the US Secretary of State noted that Ukraine has strengthened its ability to carry out long-range strikes against targets deep within Russian territory.
Rubio stressed that Washington is concerned about the risk of further escalation, which could affect other countries and escalate into a wider conflict.
“We remain ready to facilitate this process. And if any opportunity for a negotiated settlement arises, we truly believe it will benefit both Russia and Ukraine,” he added.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that Russia’s war against Ukraine , despite seemingly dragging on, is actually nearing its end. He said he initially considered this conflict the easiest to resolve among all the others he had been involved with.
