The US has withdrawn all of its B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford, Britain, amid security concerns following an investigation into a possible plot to carry out a terrorist attack near the base.

This was reported by Reuters, citing a Pentagon representative.

According to the official, all American bombers stationed at RAF Fairford have returned to their bases in the United States.

The Pentagon did not officially give the reasons for this decision, citing operational security issues. However, it was made about a week after several people were detained near the air base on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts.

According to The Guardian, at least 10 of the 12 B-1 bombers departed RAF Fairford on October 4. Some of the aircraft had arrived at the base just a few days earlier as part of a planned rotation, suggesting a quick decision to withdraw them.

On September 27, British police arrested five men near RAF Fairford on suspicion of explosives and terrorism-related offences. All were later released on bail.

Another suspect, a British-Iranian citizen, was arrested in London on October 1. He was also later released on bail. An investigation into possible foreign interference is ongoing.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said there are strong indications that Iran may have been involved in the incident, an accusation Tehran denies.

RAF Fairford is located approximately 100 miles (160 km) west of London and is used by the US Air Force to house strategic aircraft.

Earlier, several men were arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of explosives offences . The incident led to a cordon off the surrounding area and the evacuation of some local residents.
