US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that after the end of the war in Iran, the US will review its membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.

He said this in an interview with Fox News.

“If we reach a point where NATO means we can’t use these bases to protect America’s interests, then NATO is a one-way street,” the official is convinced.

According to him, the alliance is supposedly needed so that the US can station troops on European territory to protect Europe. At the same time, he assured that the Europeans do not allow the Americans to use their military bases.

“I think there’s no doubt that after this conflict is over, we’re going to have to revisit this relationship,” Rubio stressed.

However, the Secretary of State added that the final decision rests with President Donald Trump.

Recall that Trump may begin the official process of the United States’ withdrawal from NATO . This decision is seen not only as a threat to the solidarity of the allies, but also as an element of an internal electoral strategy to strengthen ratings.

As is known, against the backdrop of the US military operation against Iran, allies are pressuring President Donald Trump to explain the goals and timeline for ending the conflict.

Trump previously stated that the United States no longer needs the help of allies for the operation to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
