The US withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council: the State Department gave the reason

The US State Department explained why the Donald Trump administration suspended the country’s participation in the UN Human Rights Council back in 2025. Washington stated that the reason, in their opinion, was systemic problems in the body’s work, anti-American rhetoric, and biased attitude towards US allies.
This was reported by ABC News, citing a State Department representative.
The department said that the Trump administration withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council because, in its opinion, the body did not adhere to its own principles, spread anti-American rhetoric and anti-Semitism, and also showed leniency towards repressive regimes.
The Trump administration used these same arguments in February 2025, when the US president signed an executive order terminating Washington’s participation in the UN Human Rights Council. In the document, the White House also accused the body of protecting human rights abusers and being biased against Israel.
The State Department’s new explanation came after the publication of a report by an independent UN mission on the events in Iran.
In it, investigators said they had “reasonable grounds to believe” that certain US strikes on Iran may have constituted war crimes, including the strike on a primary school in Minab, which killed more than 150 people, including about 120 children.
The State Department rejected these conclusions and said it did not believe the report was credible. At the same time, the department stressed that protecting civilians remains a US priority.
In the same report, the UN mission also stated possible crimes against humanity by the Iranian authorities during the suppression of anti-government protests.
Recall, earlier “Pryamiy” wrote that at the end of August, the US and Iran exchanged blows again after a month-long break.
