The Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on multiple citizenship

The Verkhovna Rada adopted a bill on the introduction of the institution of multiple citizenship in Ukraine.

This was reported by People’s Deputy Oleksiy Honcharenko.

It is noted that the initiator of the bill on multiple citizenship is President Zelensky.

Multiple citizenship can be acquired in the following cases:

• In the event that a child acquires Ukrainian citizenship and the citizenship of another state at birth;
• If a child who is a citizen of Ukraine acquires the citizenship of his or her foreign adoptive parents;
• In the event of automatic acquisition of another citizenship by a citizen of Ukraine as a result of marriage to a foreigner;
• If citizenship is automatically acquired by an adult citizen of Ukraine of another nationality as a result of the application of the legislation on citizenship of a foreign state, if such a citizen of Ukraine has not received a document confirming his/her citizenship of another state;
• In the case of acquiring citizenship of Ukraine in a simplified procedure for foreigners who are citizens of states included in the list of those who can obtain citizenship in a simplified procedure;
• If citizenship was acquired by a Ukrainian from a state from the list of those whose citizens acquire citizenship of Ukraine in a simplified manner.

The law states that citizens of Ukraine who are simultaneously citizens of states included in the Cabinet of Ministers’ list may renounce Ukrainian citizenship upon request to the foreign state of which they are citizens, regardless of their place of residence.

Renunciation of Ukrainian citizenship is optional for a citizen of Ukraine who has acquired citizenship of a state included in the list of the Cabinet of Ministers.

Voluntary acquisition by a citizen of Ukraine of citizenship of a state that is not included in the list of the Cabinet of Ministers will be grounds for loss of Ukrainian citizenship.

The relevant law regulates the issue of multiple citizenship for the first time at the legislative level. The document was developed as a response to demographic and security challenges, as well as the need to restore and maintain ties with millions of Ukrainians outside the country.

Earlier it became known that Ukraine is completing the preparation of a law that will allow citizens to hold passports of several countries .

Let us recall that in December 2024, the Verkhovna Rada adopted in the first reading a draft law on ensuring the implementation of the right to acquire and retain Ukrainian citizenship.
