The Verkhovna Rada supported the creation of the Pantheon of Outstanding Ukrainians

The Verkhovna Rada supported the bill No. 15360 introduced by the president on the creation of the Ukrainian National Pantheon.

This was reported by People’s Deputy of Ukraine Yaroslav Zheleznyak.

In the first reading, the bill was supported by 290 MPs. After that, the speaker of the parliament put the document to a vote as a whole, and 287 MPs voted in favor of the corresponding decision.

“The decision has been made. The law has been adopted in its entirety,” announced the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk.

The bill was introduced by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to the head of state, the Ukrainian National Pantheon should become a nationwide place of remembrance, where outstanding Ukrainians of different eras will be honored.

“The names of all the heroes who fought for Ukraine in different centuries and eras, who inspired Ukraine, will be combined and forever inscribed in our history with great respect… A Ukraine that respects itself, values its own people and defends its right to be Ukrainians,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted.

The Ukrainian National Pantheon is a nationwide place of remembrance where the most outstanding Ukrainians who contributed to the gaining and restoration of independence, statehood, protection of sovereignty, development of culture, science, the army, civil society, and other spheres will be honored.

At the same time, the Polish government has decided to refrain from taking any harsh diplomatic steps in response to Zelensky’s statement on the creation of a Ukrainian national pantheon. Warsaw is waiting for the publication of a full list of figures who will be honored there.

Poland emphasizes that the list of names included in the Ukrainian National Pantheon will be of fundamental importance for bilateral relations. If it includes figures who are associated in Poland with the Volyn tragedy, the possibilities for a calm diplomatic response may be significantly narrowed. In this case, political pressure on the Polish authorities — both from the opposition and from society — may increase significantly.

In particular, the Polish government expressed dissatisfaction with Zelensky’s statement and concluded that Kyiv’s actions only aggravate relations between the countries.

It was previously reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the submission of a bill on the Ukrainian National Pantheon to the Verkhovna Rada .

It is also noted that Poland will not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union unless Kyiv reconsiders its approach to honoring OUN and UPA figures, in particular Stepan Bandera.
