The White House is preparing a peaceful meeting between Armenia and Azerbaijan: Trump will receive the leaders
US President Donald Trump plans to hold talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the White House on August 8.
This was reported by The Washington Post, citing two representatives of the head of state’s administration.
According to sources, the purpose of the meeting is to reach a peace agreement between the two countries, which have been in a state of armed confrontation for decades.
It is expected that the agreements that the parties can reach will have historical significance and will become a key moment in the process of resolving the conflict, which has been ongoing since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has escalated over Nagorno-Karabakh, a region with a predominantly Armenian population that slipped out of Baku’s control in the late 1980s. This has led to a series of wars and escalations. In September 2023, Azerbaijan regained control of the region, after which more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians left the territory.
The previous round of talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan took place in July in the UAE. At that time, the parties did not announce a final agreement, but stated that they were close to signing it.
Recall that Russia, amid deteriorating relations with Azerbaijan, began to expand its military presence in Armenia.
As reported, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev publicly accepted Ukrainian military chevrons as a gift and thanked the Ukrainian Armed Forces for their fight . His words about supporting Ukraine’s actions instantly caused a wave of indignation among Russian propagandists.
By the way, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, stated that the country’s authorities should seriously consider the issue of suspending the broadcasting of Russian TV channels on the territory of Armenia.
