The White House recommended stopping funding for programs investigating war crimes around the world and Russia’s actions against Ukraine.
This was reported by Reuters, citing sources.
It is noted that the White House recommendation is not a final decision to eliminate the programs, as the State Department may appeal.
However, two sources told Reuters that they doubted Secretary of State Marco Rubio would advocate for continued funding for most programs.
Although another source indicates that the US Secretary of State could argue in favor of maintaining funding for the investigation of war crimes in Ukraine.
“The White House has recommended cutting funding for Global Rights Compliance, a program that helps collect evidence of sexual violence and torture during the Russia-Ukraine war,” a Reuters source said.
Another program that could go unfunded is the Legal Action Network, a legal aid group that brings cases against Russian military personnel.
It was previously reported that the Trump administration had canceled initiatives aimed at holding Russia, its leader, and allies accountable for war crimes in Ukraine .
