The WHO has not determined the cause of death of a worker at an anti-plague institute in Russia.
The World Health Organization was unable to determine the exact cause of death of a worker at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Russia. Russian authorities informed the organization that the deceased and those who had been in contact with her were tested for dangerous infections.
This is reported by WHO .
According to the Russian National Coordinator for the International Health Regulations, no cases of plague have been recorded since the worker’s death. The woman and her contacts were tested for a wide range of microorganisms, including those that cause particularly dangerous infections.
“Based on the information provided, WHO has found no evidence of infection associated with this event. The main uncertainty remains the lack of a confirmed diagnosis for the deceased laboratory worker,” the organization stated.
The WHO also reported that, despite media reports, there were no biosafety incidents at the laboratory. Furthermore, no other cases of pneumonia, such as the one that killed the institute employee, have been recorded.
