US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that during a conversation with Sergei Lavrov, new ideas were discussed for ending the war in Ukraine.

He made this statement after a meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister in Kuala Lumpur, AP reports.

Rubio said the US and Russia have exchanged new ideas for peace talks regarding the war in Ukraine.

“I think this is a new and different approach. I wouldn’t call it something that guarantees peace, but it’s a concept that I will convey to President Trump,” the US Secretary of State added.

Rubio added that President Donald Trump is “disappointed and upset that the Russian side has not shown more flexibility” to end the conflict.

“We need a roadmap for how this conflict can end. And then we shared some ideas about what that could look like,” he said of the 50-minute meeting.

He also added that the US will continue to be involved where there are opportunities to change the situation for the better.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that during the meeting there was a “substantial and frank exchange of views” on issues such as Ukraine, Iran, Syria, and other global problems.

As a reminder, on May 17, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had a telephone conversation.

It should be noted that United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States is not currently planning to impose new sanctions against Russia, as it seeks to leave room for possible peace negotiations.

Earlier, Republican Majority Leader in the US Senate John Thune said that a bill on new sanctions against Russia and its allies could be considered before the August recess in Congress.
