Russia is feigning readiness for peace, mocking diplomacy and continuing to launch air strikes on Ukraine.
This was stated by the UK’s representative to the UN, Barbara Woodward, on the eve of a meeting of the UN Security Council.
“Russia is ‘mocking’ the diplomacy it claims to support. Moscow has a ‘clear and unconditional’ obligation to abide by the UN Charter, as well as the Geneva Conventions,” Woodward said.
She also emphasized that dictator Putin wants to continue the war, despite the efforts of world leaders to stop it.
Woodward noted that from July 18 to 23, the Russian Federation launched more than 940 drones and 59 missiles at Ukrainian cities, killing 20 civilians and wounding 216.
“Just a few days before, a record 728 strike UAVs were launched over Ukraine in one day,” she said.
Woodward said that more than 13,000 civilians have been killed and 34,000 injured since the start of the full-scale invasion.
“Behind every Russian strike is a person, a family, a community, whose lives have been torn apart by Russia’s brutal military invasion… There is simply no justification for such brutal aggression,” the diplomat said.
Woodward called on Russia to agree to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire as a first step towards a just and lasting peace.
Earlier it became known that the United Kingdom joined the EU energy sanctions on Russia. London reduced the ceiling price for Russian oil from 60 to 47 dollars per barrel .
It is worth noting that the United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on the Russian GRU for conducting a long-term campaign of cyber activity and a number of war crimes .
