Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised US President Donald Trump to cut purchases of Russian oil, a resource that has so far remained one of the key financial sources for the war against Ukraine.

Trump made this statement during a press conference with FBI Director Kesh Patel, the American press reports.

“He [Modi] assured me today that he will no longer buy oil from Russia. That’s a big step. Now I have to convince China to do the same,” the American leader said.

Trump added that the cessation of purchases will be gradual, but the process has already begun and “will be completed soon.”

According to Trump, the purchase of Russian oil by Asian countries, in particular India, is effectively financing the war, allowing the Kremlin to maintain an army and continue its aggression:

“This is a senseless war where they have already lost one and a half million people,” Trump stressed, speaking of Russia’s losses.

As a reminder, the Russian Federation is actively looking for ways to circumvent international sanctions in order to continue exporting refined oil products , a key source of budget revenue.

Russian oil traders are reportedly demanding that Indian state-owned companies switch to Chinese yuan payments instead of dollars or dirhams, a move that is expected to simplify financial transactions and minimize costs amid sanctions and geopolitical tensions.
