“This is no longer a US war”: Europe is concerned about Trump’s new statements

US President Donald Trump’s recent statements have caused concern in European capitals. Despite the fact that they were formally about supporting Ukraine, the EU sees his words as an attempt to shift responsibility for the war with Russia onto Europe.
This is stated in the Financial Times article.
As the publication notes, Trump shocked European partners when he declared that Ukraine could “regain all its lands” – but with the support of the European Union, without promises of unconditional assistance from the United States. This turn was perceived not as a strengthening of the European role, but as an attempt by Trump to distance himself from responsibility in the event that the situation on the front does not turn in favor of Kyiv.
“This looks like the beginning of a blame game,” one European official commented, emphasizing that the US is well aware of how difficult it will be for the EU to impose trade tariffs on China and India, as Trump is calling for.
The tone of Trump’s statements on Truth Social is also considered indicative. According to one official, his formulations such as “Good luck to everyone!” sound like a handover note – they say, “now you’re on your own.”
Another diplomat described the change in tone as “striking,” but at the same time acknowledged that Trump’s demands on Europe are too high, and his support is conditional.
Carlo Masala, a professor of international relations at the Bundeswehr University in Munich, believes that Trump is deliberately distancing himself from the war in Ukraine. His goal is to avoid a situation in which this war will be perceived as his own, and not “Biden’s war.”
First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Serhiy Kyslytsia, who was previously present at Zelensky’s meeting with Trump in the Oval Office, believes that Trump’s rhetoric is the result of coordinated consultations, not spontaneous statements.
“This is the result of long discussions between the United States, Ukraine, and Europe,” he explained, adding that Trump received relevant analytical briefings and advice from advisers.
According to Kyslytsa, European countries can and should do more, especially those that still retain energy dependence on Russia.
Despite formal signals of support, including from Emmanuel Macron, who called Trump’s position “very correct,” behind the scenes in the EU there is suspicion about Washington’s true intentions. European analysts believe that Trump may not fulfill his commitments even if the EU agrees to his terms.
“He is unpredictable and unreliable on these issues,” said Liana Fix, a senior analyst at the Council on Foreign Relations.
As a reminder, US President Donald Trump expressed his disappointment with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and named the conditions under which Russia would lose the war against Ukraine.
As reported, US President Donald Trump unexpectedly changed his position on the war in Ukraine – he stated that Kyiv, with the support of Europe, is capable of returning all the territories captured by Russia.
