German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that frozen Russian assets should remain in Europe, and decisions about them should be made by European countries themselves.
This is reported by “European Pravda” with reference to Merz’s statement before the start of the European Council meeting in Brussels on October 15.
Journalists asked the German Chancellor how he felt about the proposal to transfer Russian assets frozen in the EU to the control of the United States to promote a peaceful settlement.
In response, Merz emphasized that these assets are frozen in Europe, so the decision regarding them should be made by the European side.
“These are assets that are frozen in Europe – and they should remain frozen in Europe. This is our business, and we make a decision on this,” the chancellor said.
It was previously reported that the United States has proposed to European countries to transfer some of the frozen Russian assets to a new financial structure under the control of the Donald Trump administration. This mechanism is being considered as part of attempts to resume peace talks with Russia.
