Due to massive shelling of energy infrastructure, thousands of Kharkiv residents will be left without heat in the midst of severe frost.

Mayor Igor Terekhov said that damage to the heating system forced utility workers to drain the coolant from one of the largest CHP plants.

As a result, 820 residential buildings will be temporarily left without heating to avoid freezing and destruction of heating networks.

“The strikes are targeted at the energy infrastructure. The goal is obvious: to cause maximum destruction to it and leave the city without heat in severe frost. We already understand that difficult decisions will have to be made. One of them is forced, but the only possible one,” Terekhov wrote.

The mayor explained that “to prevent the network from freezing, we need to drain the coolant in the heating system of 820 houses, which are powered by one of the largest CHP plants. I understand how difficult it is in twenty-degree frost. But the unprecedented attack on critical infrastructure leaves no other option. Our experts see no other way out.”

The city has 101 heat points open 24/7, where residents can warm up, have hot drinks, and charge their phones. The authorities will open additional heating points as needed.

There are also possible disruptions to electric transport, so additional bus routes are being introduced for residents.

“This is a difficult night and a difficult morning for Kharkiv. But the city is working, all services are on the ground, decisions are being made quickly and responsibly. We are keeping the situation under control and will do everything possible. Kharkiv will survive!!!”, concluded Terekhov.

Let us recall that on the night of Tuesday, February 3, the Russian occupation army launched a ballistic strike on Kharkiv.
