On the evening of Wednesday, September 30, a drone, which according to preliminary data was a Russian “Geran” type drone with a jet engine, exploded in the Orhei district of Moldova. The crash created several craters and scattered debris over 100 meters.
This was reported by the Ministry of Defense and the General Inspectorate of Police of Moldova, Newsmaker reports.
The drone entered Moldovan airspace at around 8:45 p.m. It later crashed near the village of Branesti after colliding with trees in a forest strip near a highway. Local residents reported a loud sound that sounded like an explosion to law enforcement.
A crater about 50 centimeters in diameter and about 30 centimeters deep was formed at the crash site. Damaged trees were found within a radius of up to 30 meters, as well as traces of the shock wave and thermal impact.
Law enforcement officers also found two more craters, about 50 and 30 centimeters in diameter. They are located about 15 meters from the main explosion site, on the side of the road.
Numerous pieces of the drone were found within a radius of about 120 meters. Among them are parts of the rear wing section marked “Geran-4”, electronic modules and power plant elements.
Separately, law enforcement officers discovered a jet engine with signs of thermal damage. These fragments, according to the preliminary assessment of the Moldovan authorities, indicate the use of a “Geran” type drone with a jet engine.
As a reminder, the drone flew over Moldova on the morning of September 30, and later fell near the village of Girbovec in the Anenii Noi district. After the fall, the drone exploded, but no one was injured.
As previously reported, the site of an explosion of an unknown object was discovered in Moldova near the border with Ukraine . On the outskirts of the village of Krokmaz, burnt earth and fragments of metal and plastic were found. What exactly exploded is currently being investigated.
