Estonia said that three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered its airspace without permission and remained there for 12 minutes. The country’s Foreign Ministry has already summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires to protest and hand over a note regarding the incident that occurred on September 19 over the Gulf of Finland.
The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported this on its website.
“Russia has already violated Estonian airspace four times this year, which in itself is unacceptable. But today’s incursion, in which three fighter jets invaded our airspace, is unprecedentedly brazen,” Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said.
According to him, the international community’s response to this case must be decisive.
“The increasingly large-scale testing of borders and Russia’s growing aggressiveness must be met with rapidly increasing political and economic pressure,” he added.
It was previously reported that Estonia is actively strengthening its eastern border with Russia : an anti-tank ditch is already being built, and hundreds of bunkers are planned. Meanwhile, the opposition party Isamaa has called for the complete closure of the border with Russia, explaining this by the increased security risks against the backdrop of joint military exercises between Russia and Belarus.
Estonia also undertook the construction of the Baltic Defense Line on the southeastern border with Russia.
The Finnish parliament has previously approved a withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of Landmines . In the future, the Defence Forces will be allowed to use such weapons.
By the way, German intelligence has received evidence of Russia’s preparation for aggression against NATO . Thus, the aggressor country plans to test the effectiveness of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
