The head of the investigative journalism department of Ukrainska Pravda, Mykhailo Tkach, spoke about the charges against him and cameraman Yaroslav Bondarenko after their detention in Vienna. According to him, the charges included espionage in the interests of Ukrainian military intelligence, participation in a criminal organization, and causing harm to Austria.
This is reported by “Ukrainian Pravda” .
Tkach said that at the beginning of the interrogation he was given a document to sign, which he compared with an analogue of the report of suspicion. It listed 3 articles under which the charges were brought.
“At the beginning of the interrogation, I was given a document to sign. As far as I understand, this is an analogue of suspicion. And there were 3 articles written there that we are accused of,” the journalist said.
According to Tkach, law enforcement officers did not explain what the accusations were based on. He noted that during interrogation he concluded that there was no evidence against him and the operator.
“We actually worked in Vienna many times, always in public places, and accordingly, we worked with public figures, people whose information is of public interest. And so hearing such a formulation was a shock to me,” said Tkach.
The journalist called the detention an “extraordinary misunderstanding.” He also suggested that the situation could have arisen due to information that someone passed on to Austrian law enforcement, perhaps through manipulation.
The first part of the interrogation lasted about 2 hours. After that, the Ukrainian consul arrived, with whom Tkach was allowed to talk, and then the interrogation continued.
Tkach thanked Ukrainian diplomats for their assistance and noted that their intervention, in his opinion, significantly helped in this situation.
