To deter Russia: Germany will spend 12 billion euros on long-range weapons
Germany is planning to build a new arsenal of long-range weapons to deter Russia, which could cost nearly 12 billion euros. The program involves purchasing and developing missiles capable of hitting targets hundreds and thousands of kilometers away.
This is reported by Politico .
The German defense ministry considers the program one of the key priorities for Germany and NATO. It is about creating capabilities for strikes “deep behind enemy lines” with conventional weapons. Potential targets for such weapons could be command posts, airfields, missile launchers and supply centers located at a considerable distance from the front line.
The plan consists of 4 parts. The first systems are due to arrive as early as 2027, while the most advanced weapons, which Germany is developing jointly with the UK, are planned to be introduced by the middle of the next decade.
At the same time, almost 12 billion euros for the program have not yet been approved. The German Ministry of Defense noted that the corresponding expenditures must be approved by the Bundestag. The closest element of the program should be a new inexpensive cruise missile, which Germany plans to begin introducing in 2027.
Berlin also plans to have the US Typhon launchers armed with Tomahawk missiles ready for initial combat by the end of the decade. This should provide Germany with long-range weapons while it develops its own European systems.
Germany is developing the other two parts of the program jointly with the UK. Overall, Berlin plans to receive a combination of cheaper mass-produced missiles, American Tomahawks, and modern European long-range systems.
By the way, the German Ministry of Defense is considering the possibility of purchasing inexpensive long-range cruise missiles of Ukrainian and Israeli production to strengthen its own arsenal . This decision became relevant after the delay in the deployment of American missile systems and uncertainty about their supply.
Recall that the German defense company Diehl Defence is in talks with the Ukrainian company Fire Point regarding the possible joint production of Flamingo cruise missiles in Germany . The parties plan to hold a series of meetings in the coming weeks to discuss potential cooperation.
