Traffic cameras helped: media released details of the assassination of the Iranian leader

For several years, Israel had access to most of the traffic cameras located in Tehran, which helped determine the location of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

According to sources familiar with the operation, before the strike, Israeli intelligence agencies used cameras to monitor the movements of Khamenei’s guards and drivers.

Images captured from surveillance cameras were encrypted and transmitted to Israel — to servers in Tel Aviv and the south of the country.

In particular, one of the cameras, located on a street with government buildings, allowed Israeli intelligence services to obtain data on the movement of security guards.

In this way, intelligence obtained information about their residential addresses, work schedules, movements, and the people they were transporting.

In addition, Israel disabled mobile phone towers, preventing the guards from receiving any messages.

“Long before the bombs fell, we knew Tehran like Jerusalem. And when you know (a place – ed.) as well as the street you grew up on, you notice one thing that’s out of place,” the Israeli intelligence officer explained.

The FT article notes that Khamenei, unlike Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who spent years hiding in underground bunkers, did not go into hiding. He publicly admitted to murder and prepared for death.

The decision to eliminate Khamenei on the first day of the military operation was strategic, as he could later go into hiding.

“He had two bunkers — and if he was there, Israel wouldn’t have been able to reach him with the bombs they have,” the source assured the publication.

Israeli fighter jets used up to 30 precision-guided munitions to eliminate Khamenei. Among the weapons used were missiles that Iranian air defenses are unable to neutralize.

“The decision to strike in the morning rather than at night allowed Israel to achieve tactical surprise for the second time, despite the fact that Iran was well prepared,” the source added.
