A train has collided with a passenger bus at a level crossing in the Ratchathewi district of the Thai capital, Bangkok, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 20 others.

According to local services, the bus stopped at a red light crossing, after which the freight train did not have time to brake and crashed into the vehicle.

“The bus stopped at a railway crossing due to a traffic light signal, and the driver was unable to stop the train in time,” said Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat.

After the collision, a fire broke out, which spread to several vehicles nearby.

According to Reuters , a total of 25 people were injured, some of them in serious condition. Rescue services continue to work at the scene of the incident.

The Bangkok Post reported that a bus on route 206 was stuck on the tracks due to heavy traffic and a possible malfunction of the barrier. After being hit, the train dragged the bus for about 50 meters, after which the vehicle caught fire.

Earlier, it was reported that a passenger train derailed in the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexico, killing at least 13 people . Another 98 passengers were injured, some of whom were hospitalized.

Recall that on July 27, a large-scale railway tragedy occurred in southern Germany in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg – a regional express train derailed. According to preliminary information, the accident was caused by a landslide caused by heavy rain. At least three people died, and about 50 more passengers were injured to varying degrees.
