Kyiv is set for a major public transport fare hike as 8 billion hryvnias are diverted from the city budget—originally meant for transport development, road repairs, education, and healthcare—to pay bonuses for Ukrzaliznytsia officials.

This was reported by People’s Deputy Oleksiy Honcharenko, referring to a document from the Kyiv City State Administration Finance Department.

According to the parliamentarian, the central government’s decision has created a massive “budget hole,” leaving Kyiv unable to maintain its currently low fares. At present, a single trip on public transport in the capital costs 8 hryvnias, and with regular use, 6.50 hryvnias. The upcoming changes are expected to multiply these costs several times over.

“The luxury of officials on Bankova Street is jeopardizing the comfort and accessibility of the capital’s transport. Kyiv has always been proud of having the lowest fares in Ukraine, but that may soon become history. Eight billion hryvnias, which were meant for transport and social infrastructure, were taken from Kyiv residents to provide bonuses to officials,” Honcharenko emphasized.

It is worth recalling that on August 20, the Verkhovna Rada adopted amendments to the state budget, which removed these 8 billion UAH from Kyiv’s funding.
