Treasures in the basement walls: a cache of gold worth 9 million euros was found during construction in Belgium

A student discovered a cache of gold bars, nuggets and coins while digging in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, Belgium. The find is estimated to be worth around €9 million, and law enforcement is working to identify its origin and possible owners.

An 18-year-old student named Kobe was working on a construction site laying sewers on the grounds of an old manor house. During the excavation, workers discovered an object hidden in the brickwork of the basement.

The cache contained numbered bank ingots, large natural nuggets, and ancient gold coins.

“Suddenly we saw that there was something lying there. So we started digging it up. Then we saw a gold bar. It turned out that it was a little bigger than we thought,” the student said.

The estate is located about 30 km northwest of Brussels. It was built at the end of the 19th century for the industrialist Theophilus Van Assche, who founded a brewery there that operated from 1899 to 1970.

The historic complex is currently being reconstructed by the charitable organization CAW Oost-Vlaanderen. During the replacement of communications from the old premises, only the supporting walls were left, where the cache was discovered.

After the discovery, the builders called the police. The gold was transported to a secure vault in Brussels.

The East Flanders Public Prosecutor’s Office is to verify whether the precious metal has a criminal origin. At the same time, the descendants of the former owner of the estate, a charity and a construction company may claim the find.
