President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the increasing chances of a temporary ceasefire and progress in developing security guarantees for Ukraine.

He noted this during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Suspilne reports .

The German Chancellor said that for the first time since the start of the full-scale war, a ceasefire looks like a realistic scenario. According to him, only the president of Ukraine can make final decisions on territorial issues.

Merz stressed that Germany supports the idea of a just truce with clear security guarantees from the US and Europe. He stressed that any agreements must take into account Ukraine’s European prospects and create conditions for its recovery.

President Zelensky confirmed that the negotiating teams are continuing to work today on the parameters of a possible ceasefire. He noted that the American partners have clearly understood Ukraine’s position, although differences with Russia over territories remain.

According to Zelensky, the United States can play the role of a mediator and offer options for steps to find a compromise. The president also stated that Ukraine is interested in the United States continuing to be a mediator in the negotiation process.

Separately, Zelenskyy reported on progress in developing security guarantees based on the model of NATO’s Article 5. According to him, these guarantees currently exist in the form of a first draft, and the issue of monitoring the ceasefire will become their component.

Earlier it was reported that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that he does not rule out the possibility of a temporary ceasefire for Christmas in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
